How to Prepare for Wildfire Season and Public Safety Power Shutoffs

With warmer weather in the summer and fall comes the increased risk of wildfires. To reduce the risk of wildfires, planned power outages called Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) events may occur to keep the public safe.

PG&E will issue a PSPS in response to extreme weather, such as intense heat and strong winds. During a PSPS, powerlines in high-risk areas are shut off to prevent PG&E’s power lines and equipment from accidentally sparking a fire. Even though your home may not be in a high-risk area, your power may be shut off if the lines that bring power to your home run through high-risk areas.

Prepare your home and family for a PSPS event:

  • Sign up for AlertSF by texting your zip code to 888-777 or by visiting AlertSF will send you alerts and instructions during power outages and other emergencies in San Francisco.
  • Sign up for PSPS alerts with PG&E
  • Stock up on non-perishable food
  • Keep your mobile phone and other devices charged as much as possible if notified of a potential PSPS event
  • Keep a flashlight and extra batteries on hand
  • Have cash in small denominations
  • Move your vehicle outside if you cannot open your garage manually
  • If you rely on power for medical needs, enroll in the Medical Baseline program to receive extra PSPS notifications from PG&E and a discount on your monthly bill.
