Four Maisin Scholarships Available to Bayview-Hunters Point Teens

The SFPUC social impact partners will sponsor four scholarships for college-bound high school seniors from the Bayview-Hunters Point Community through the 2019 Maisin Scholar Award Program, which has now begun accepting applications.

The Maisin Scholar Award, a program of the San Francisco Education Fund, helps San Francisco public high school graduates afford college and achieve their education and career goals. Funding for the SFPUC’s four Maisin Scholarships will come from the agency’s private firm partners: Carollo Engineers; Brown and Caldwell; AECOM, Water Resources Engineering Inc., Avila Associates, and Hazen and Sawyer. This is the third year that SFPUC’s firm partners will be supporting Maisin Scholar Awards.

Through the Maisin Scholar Award Program, scholars can receive up to $3,000 annually for up to four years for their college education. In addition to financial support, scholars also have access to internship opportunities, peer support and academic and career counseling. Bayview-Hunters Point high school seniors in the San Francisco Unified School District who will attend college or a vocational program in Fall 2019 and have between a 2.0 – 3.5 cumulative unweighted grade point average are encouraged to apply.

Applicants from District 10 will be considered for the following four renewable scholarship awards, whose application deadlines are February 14, 2020:

  • The Dr. Espanola Jackson Scholarship was created to honor Dr. Jackson, a long-time civil rights and community advocate from Bayview-Hunters Point. Carollo will be sponsoring this scholarship.
  • The STEM Scholarship supports students pursing a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) career. Carollo will be sponsoring this scholarship as well.
  • STEM Scholarships for female students, which supports female students pursuing a STEM career. There are two of these particular scholarships. Brown and Caldwell are sponsoring one of the scholarships. AECOM, Water Resources Engineering, Inc., Avila Associates, Hazen and Sawyer are sponsoring the other scholarship.

“Carollo is committed to educational opportunities that will help promising high school students achieve their goals and dreams,” said Lou Carella of Carollo. “We are proud to have started this partnership with the Maisin Scholar Award and Southeast Community Facility Commission in 2017. We are especially thrilled that other firms have decided to join us to provide multi-year scholarships for Bayview Hunters Point students.”

In addition to the four scholarships funded by the SFPUC’s social impact partners, 75 additional scholarships are available to local students through the Maisin Award Program.

The Maisin Scholarship is part of the SFPUC’s Social Impact Partnership Program, which invites private sector firm partners to give back locally to the communities in which they are performing work on behalf of the SFPUC. The SFPUC is the first public utility in the country to implement a social impact program that advances corporate social responsibility as a part of its competitive bidding process for professional services, alternative delivery and energy contracts valued at $5 million or more.

Other examples of the SFPUC’s Social Impact Partnership program include the Bayview Bistro, an open-air marketplace featuring local food vendors, a collaborative educational endeavor with John O’Connell High School and CityWorks, which offers paid internships for residents in the City’s Southeast communities.
