Why the SFPUC Participates in Fleet Week

San Francisco is about to get loud in the sky.

It’s that time of the year when the roaring sound and choreograph of the Blue Angels in the sky capture residents and visitors’ attention. One can’t help but look up and enjoy a free show during the workday throughout Fleet Week, a free, annual event that draws thousands of people to San Francisco.

The SFPUC brought out the emergency water manifold to show one way it would support the community after a major disaster.

Held every year during the first or second week of October since 1981, Fleet Week takes place this year on October 6 – 14 and features an air show with the Blue Angels flying over the San Francisco Bay along with military ships on display in the Marina Green.

In celebration of Fleet Week 2019, the SFPUC will share about how it helps San Francisco be prepared and the importance of having an emergency plan, including storing more than enough water for family members and pets. The SFPUC will also showcase the emergency water manifold and provide water during the event.

For the SFPUC, Fleet Week is an opportunity to celebrate its partnerships with the U.S. Navy and Marines, building capacity and strengthening the City’s response.

The SFPUC urges San Franciscans to be prepared for the unexpected:

  • Water – Have at least one gallon per person per day for a minimum of three days. Be sure to include water for pets. Replace the emergency water supply every six months and store it in a food-grade container. In the event the emergency water supply runs out, treat tap water by boiling it for three minutes or disinfect by adding eights drops of bleach per gallon of water.
  • Emergency plan – Create or update an emergency plan and practice with family and friends. Be sure to know what to do in the event a tech down situation happens.
  • Emergency kit – Gather all essential supplies and make sure to periodically update the materials.
