Construction has started on the SFPUC’s latest rooftop solar installation at the Opera House in Civic Center. The rooftop solar system, which joins other installations around the city, will produce between 138,00 and 145,000 kilowatt hours of energy per year, which would be enough electricity to power about 20 homes for a year.

The SFPUC is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and operation of City owned solar voltaic (PV) installations. While they might be invisible from the street, the SFPUC is generating electricity on rooftops across the city including City Hall, Chinatown Health Center, Pier 96, and the Moscone Center, among others.

By the end of 2019, there will be a total of 23 SFPUC-owned solar energy facilities that can generate up to 10,244,550 kWh of  energy per year – enough electricity to power about 1,263 homes for a year.

Rooftop solar arrays feed into the City’s electrical grid, providing local, renewable, green-house gas free to buildings across San Francisco.
