CleanPowerSF Saves Customers $3.5 Million Over Past Three Years

Since launching in 2016, CleanPowerSF has saved its customers a collective $3.5 million, all while delivering power that is more renewable than the competition, according to the latest statistics from the SFPUC.

Following the largest and last major enrollment in April, more than 360,000 businesses and residents are now receiving energy from CleanPowerSF, the City’s local renewable power program. Because its rates are cheaper than the ones offered by Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), CleanPowerSF has saved enrollees $3.5 million over the past three years.

In addition to the customer savings, CleanPowerSF has consistently offered a greener alternative to PG&E. In 2016, CleanPowerSF’s Green product was 7 percent more renewable than the PG&E default product, and for the past two years, the Green service has been approximately 10 percent more renewable. San Francisco residents and businesses clearly trust CleanPowerSF—the program has a 97 percent retention rate among its customers.

Having access to a cheaper, greener energy product is a key priority of San Francisco residents. According to a poll conducted earlier this year, nearly 70 percent of respondents were in favor of the SFPUC delivering public power to the City, citing more affordable rates and cleaner energy alternatives as reasons for their support.

Along with managing CleanPowerSF, the SFPUC delivers 100 percent greenhouse gas free hydroelectricity to municipal facilities such as City Hall, the San Francisco International Airport, public schools and libraries, Muni vehicles and more. With its two power programs, the SFPUC now meets almost 80 percent of the electricity demand for San Francisco. CleanPowerSF and Hetch Hetchy hydroelectricity have also been instrumental in helping the City reduce greenhouse gas emissions 36 percent below 1990 levels.
