Signing up for 100 percent renewable electricity was a simple choice for one San Francisco grocery store.

Rainbow Grocery, a worker-owned cooperative in the Mission District established in 1975, is the largest grocery store to opt up to SuperGreen, CleanPowerSF’s 100 percent renewable energy option. From solar installation and native plant garden to energy efficient coolers and special recycling programs, Rainbow Grocery has shown its dedication to incorporating sustainability into its daily business operations.

Operated by the SFPUC, San Francisco’s Community Choice Aggregation program CleanPowerSF offers two choices for cleaner energy. The Green service program is currently 48 percent renewable, and the SuperGreen service is 100 percent renewable.

By choosing to be a CleanPowerSF SuperGreen customer, Rainbow Grocery will source 100 percent renewable electricity—generated primarily from California-based wind and solar projects—for its location at 13th and Folsom Streets in the Mission District. Founded in 1975, Rainbow Grocery focuses on providing a wide selection of organic and locally sourced products at the most affordable price. Rainbow Grocery is also a certified Green Business.

Following this month’s enrollment, CleanPowerSF and Hetchy Hetchy Power will generate nearly 80 percent of the electricity demand in San Francisco.
